Alternative Dispute Resolution Services

The Boreal Centre for Dispute Resolution provides expert dispute resolution services to the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including facilitation, principled negotiation, mediation, consultation, multi-party consensus-building and training. Drawing on national, international and cross-cultural experience, the Boreal Centre for Dispute Resolution offers clients a depth of knowledge and practical experience with proven outcomes that resolve complex issues in a mutually beneficial manner.
Facilitation
An experienced facilitator leads the group through a discussion, problem-solving, or visioning process in order to gain insight, resolve issues, clarify objectives, create an action plan, etc. The facilitator is responsible for creating an environment which is conducive to a successful dialogue between the participants, manages the emotional climate, provides structure to the process and assists the parties to move through difficult issues.
Principled Negotiation
An alternative to adversarial approaches, including litigation, in which one party "wins" and the other "loses", resulting in high costs, limited agreements, resentment and damaged relationships, principled negotiation provides a way of coming to an agreement in which all parties are satisfied with the results. This win-win approach can provide for more creative and expansive agreements that benefit all parties, create stability, enhance agreement implementation, and preserve good working relationships into the future. This process is also referred to as interest-based or collaborative negotiation.
Mediation
Mediation can also be described as "assisted negotiation", whereby a skilled intervener, who may offer subject expertise but is uninvolved in the conflict, assists the parties to discuss the issues, develop understanding and come to an agreement that is mutually beneficial. Mediation is a flexible, creative and effective process which may be adapted to resolve inter-personal, inter-group, inter-cultural conflicts, at the local, national and international level. The goal of mediation is to facilitate dialogue, promote deep mutual understanding and a commitment to collaborative problem solving.
